fair enough. but here’s the thing. the web series isn’t lacking for detail, layers, or vibrancy……which is what makes sense would suffer with a weak budget. like some of these scenes are really beautiful and well done, almost cinematic quality:
the issue is CONSISTENCY when it comes to basic ass proportions, scale, and line work. the skeleton of the show is a mess. like how do you go from frames like the ones up there to THIS, in the matter of seconds:
over and over and over.
check the wonky frame. so there’s time and money to highlight her hair, add dimension to the eyes, shadows to the skin, color to the lips….but not make sure you, professionally trained and employed animation team, do the first step - draw an outline of something that passes as a human. instead of an insect. aiiiiiight.
90s anime animation errors
To all those people trying to find errors in the 90s anime to ‘make up’ (pun intended) for the train wreck that the animation in Crystal is…
what’s the point?
Not only the old anime was drawn more than 20 years ago but what’s more important it’s that the old anime was never remembered as ‘badly animated’.
Until Crystal nobody ever noticed these ‘errors’ (which people are working really hard to find). The old anime was 200 episodes long and nobody ever pointed out its so-called animation errors.
Crystal is only 3 episodes so far and it’s already famous for its painfully bad animation.
So instead of making Crystal look better by trying to bring down the old anime, voice your opinions so they’ll be heard and hopefully people in Japan will do something about.
This is not the reboot that we, sailor moon fans, deserve.
To add to this, the old SM anime was:
200 episodes long — if you’ve ever seen a single show at this length that manged to retain consistently high animation quality, I’d love to hear it
Not one of the hugest, most influential franchises in Japan of the last twenty fucking years.
Yes, the old anime was hardly some flawless animation masterpiece. Many of the art directors had drastically different styles and a couple of them were pretty unskilled. But it had life, it had love, it had attention to detail and characters that felt real through body language and facial expressions (as well as solid writing, another thing Crystal doesn’t have, but that’s a topic for another time). Even when the animation wasn’t at its best, it was cute and not, you know, physically painful to look at! And when it was at its best, it was absolutely gorgeous.
Crystal’s worst is much, much worse than the original anime’s. And that’s the thing, too: the original anime had highs and lows. Crystal is consistently at its very worst. There are maybe two frames per episode that aren’t completely lopsided, showing a lack of absolutely basic drawing skills, and just reeking of amateurishness. And it’s not just that the stills are ugly — the animation itself is completely unacceptable, with even the most simple movement having the characters’ proportions change DRASTICALLY from frame to frame. It’s honestly at a level where I don’t understand how those people were hired by the animation industry in the first place, because it’s painfully clear not a single one of them knows how to do their goddamn job.
I have seen many shittily-animated anime, and Sailor Moon Crystal is hands-down the worst. The fact that they chose to give one of the most well-loved, respected franchises in the last two decades this absolutely abominable treatment is downright insulting. And this is after they pushed it back an entire year, and with them releasing it on a bi-monthly basis.
This is fucking inexcusable.
